Traditional/Face-to-Face
Traditional courses are in-person, face-to-face classes in a classroom. There are many variations of traditional courses at CVTC:
- Faculty Enhanced (FE) - An FE course is structured with an hour of academic support built into the course schedule. FE sessions are led by an instructor reviewing challenging course content, discussing course assignments, and supporting development of study skills related to student success in the course. There is no additional change to students for this class format.
- Supplemental Instruction (SI) - SI is an academic support model that utilizes peer assisted study sessions. The program targets traditionally difficult academic courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions. The SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools and predict test items.
MyChoice
These courses allow you to complete your coursework in person or online depending on your needs which can vary from week to week. Specific time for face-to-face delivery will be scheduled and always available, but it's your choice to attend.
Please Note: Some on-site experiences are required for program completions (i.e. clinical rotations, internships, practicums, etc.). Please see individual program pages for specific requirements.
Online
In online courses you can participate from home, school, or your local library - anywhere with a computer and internet access. Never set foot in a classroom while entering the wonderful world of flexible learning. Online courses requires a high degree of self-motivation and time management skills are critical to success as there will be due dates for assigned work.
Your class will NOT meet face-to-face, but participating in the course and following the instructors timeline is critical. While you don't have a synchronous time that you must be online, you do have to participate regularly. The online portion can be accessed anywhere, anytime! You must check in and participate regularly.

Online & On-Site Testing
This format differs from online courses in that they require you to take proctored exams. There are a variety of ways to have your exams proctored. Individuals who may be approved to proctor exams include:
- Adult learning center employees
- Local college testing center staff
- Commanding officers
- Employer, school, or public librarians
- Human resource or educational/training representatives
- Managers or supervisors
- Teachers/professors (academic relationship only)
Online Live
Online courses require a computer/device and internet access. Your class will meet in real time online as scheduled and also have additional independent online work. Regular online attendance during the scheduled time, participation in the online activities, and following the instructor's timeline is critical. Online courses require a high degree of self-motivation and time management skills.
Hybrid
Hybrid courses are a combination of face-to-face classroom instruction and online learning. The division of online and classroom instruction for each hybrid course will vary depending on the course content and the instructor preference, but typically one half of the course is online and one half is in a classroom or lab. Hybrid courses work well for motivated learners who find it challenging to attend frequent traditional classes. Participation is very unique in a Hybrid. Your instructor will blend participation opportunities in the classroom, as well as online learning opportunities. You will participate like any traditional class during the week, sometimes in class, and sometimes online.
Web Conferencing
A web conferencing course is conducted on multiple campuses with the use of Microsoft Skype for Business, an online collaboration tool that instructors use to present course materials. Students watch and listen to the lecture using a computer, and in some cases, the instructor may use a Web camera. The students and teacher communicate by voice, text chat, and question and answer interaction.
Blended
Blended courses have less than 50% of the course delivered online, while the rest of the course is in a face-to-face format. Your instructor will offer multiple participation opportunities via in class activities, as well as online learning opportunities.
Open Lab
Open lab courses at CVTC provide a location where students have access to the resources they need to complete their coursework at a flexible time. There are currently two varieties of open lab courses:
- Attendance Not Required - These courses allow you to complete your coursework at any time during the available lab hours. You may even be able to complete your coursework at home without coming to a campus.
- Attendance Required - Courses are scheduled in labs that provide the necessary equipment for hands-on learning.
