Is the Substance Use Disorder Counseling Program Right For You?
Is CVTC’s Substance Use Disorder Counseling (formerly AODA) program right for you? Let’s take a look at what you can expect and the opportunities available to you.
You Can Succeed
Do you have a strong desire to have a career in a helping profession? Perhaps you’ve been affected by family members or friends struggling with substance abuse issues, or have experienced such struggles of your own. Whether you are motivated by personal experiences or just by a caring heart, the Substance Use Disorder Counseling program at CVTC could be your path into a career in helping people.
Successful SUD counselors have the ability to comprehend the challenges a person faces. They work collaboratively with others and can think on their feet as situations change. Counselors are good listeners, have good communication skills, communicate professionally, respect confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and legal responsibilities. They are people who help others heal.
Opportunities Abound
Most CVTC SUD Counseling program graduates enter the field immediately as SUD counselors, working for the many health care providers that offer services to people struggling with substance abuse issues. These include hospitals and clinics, group homes, and non-profit organizations. Many are hired by public institution, such as counties, educational facilities, and the state corrections system. Placement of CVTC graduates is high, as there are more job openings than available gradates.
After gaining experience in the field, counselors can apply to become clinical substance abuse counselors and move into clinical settings or supervisory positions.
You’ll be in Demand
CVTC Substance Use Disorder Counseling program graduates are sought out by area employers, who have learned to trust their levels of training and commitment.
“We like to hire CVTC graduates because of the concentrated focus on the area in which they’ve graduated,” said Lynda Olson of Lutheran Social Services. “The students are motivated to learn and are able to see real life examples through their work in their internships at LSS and other places. They are always willing to ask questions, and open to the different variety of programs that LSS offers.”
Anita Kuster, the supervisor at LSS’s Affinity House in Eau Claire, agrees: “Affinity House likes to hire graduates of the CVTC SUD Counseling program because they are hard workers and know their craft. They are knowledgeable, willing to learn, reliable, and dependable.”
