Are you interested in the healthcare field and want to make a difference in the lives of people, but don’t see yourself in a direct patient-care role? CVTC’s Health Information Management and Technology program could be the way you find your place in the healthcare field.
HIMT professionals collect, analyze, monitor, maintain, and report data quality principles and legal and information standards. They protect and secure digital and traditional medical information. HIMT professionals make a difference in the lives of patients and caregivers, as documentation of health records impacts decisions related to caring for a patient, and the legalities of healthcare facility practices and policies.
As an HIMT professional, you will become a critical member of the healthcare team, working directly with patient care professionals to ensure proper documentation of the care they provide. But there are many roles within the HIMT profession. You could choose to work on your own, with others, or a combination of both.
Opportunities Abound
Health information technology is one of the fastest growing occupations in the U.S. according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And as health data becomes more digitized, new opportunities continue to be created.
The HIMT field is vast and varied, from the employment setting to the job itself. Employment settings include hospitals, large clinics, small clinics, and specialty clinics, ambulatory surgery care settings, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and insurance companies. Many employers allow the employee to work from home full-time or a few days per week.
Unlike other healthcare professionals, HIMT professionals tend to work standard Monday-Friday daytime hours.
Employers include Mayo Clinic Health Systems, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, Oakleaf Surgical Hospital, Marshfield Clinic, Chippewa Valley Eye Clinic, Dove Health Care, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota hospitals and clinics, the University of Wisconsin Health, and Western Wisconsin Health Baldwin.

CVTC HIMT program graduates are sought out by area employers, who have learned to trust their levels of training and commitment.

Mayo Clinic Health System professionals in Eau Claire speak highly of CVTC graduates: “The CVTC graduates have the practical experience,” said Julie Hable, director of health information management. “They have been out in the field doing the health information technology work.”
“We host interns from CVTC, which gives them a soft introduction to the field,” said Jamie Perdeu, HIMT manager.
“We want to make sure we are involved in the community. We like candidates that come from CVTC because they come with that value,” Josie Gisel, human resources staffing coordinator added.
