Cheeseheads, beer and brats aside, Wisconsinites' unofficial claim to fame is the cow. The state boasts about 7,000 dairy farms, more than any other state, and 1.28 million cows, according to Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Adam Zwiefelhofer, Animal Science Management Instructor at Chippewa Valley Technical College, knows a thing or two about cows, and he isn't afraid to show it on National Cow Appreciation Day, Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
"I truly appreciate cows because they work hard 24/7, 365 days a year to produce sustainably raised, high-quality milk and healthy beef which isn’t an easy task!" Zwiefelhofer said. "Midwest cows have a very noble purpose for their lives – to provide the healthiest and most nutrient dense food available anywhere in the world."

- Cows can sleep while standing
- Cows can see almost 360 degrees
- More than 800 different cattle breeds exist
- Cows are very social and don’t like to be alone
- Cows have no upper front teeth
