Heating, Air Conditioning, & Refrigeration (HVACR)

CVTC along with your school have partnered to offer high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in HVACR (Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs.

Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers, often called HVACR technicians, work on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. HVACR technicians work mostly in homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings, or factories.

When: August or January start dates, Monday and Wednesday, 5  -  9 p.m.

Location: CVTC Energy Education Center (Eau Claire)

Requirement: Students must be a junior or senior to participate.

Course Descriptions

General Information

Today's HVACR industry is stronger than ever. Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Commercial and residential building construction is expected to drive employment growth, and job opportunities for HVACR technicians are expected to be strong.

Through hands - on, simulation, and online instructional experiences, you will receive training patterned after the day - to - day demands of this career, including electrical wiring, troubleshooting circuits, service, and installation of HVACR equipment.

601 - 125 Safety HVAC
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to OSHA based safety training. Students will examine and practice safety measures based upon OSHA standards and regulations. Basic personal protective equipment, fire protection, lockout/tagout and slips, trips and falls, as well as many other safety items, will be evaluated.

601 - 140 Electricity Theory
The content of this course deals with the fundamentals of electricity and electronics with application to the area of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration. Understanding AC and DC circuits, schematics and Ohms law will be the primary focus.

601 - 148 Electricity Principles
This course focuses on the application of electrical principles and theory.  The student will be asked to wire and install a variety of electrical devices and systems.  In addition, the student will focus on motor classification, operation and troubleshooting.
