What are high school academies (HSA)?
A HSA is one or more courses taught by Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) faculty which lead to a credential or at least 12 credits in a career pathway. High school students earn both high school and college credit.
Who pays for tuition for HSA students?
Tuition, fees, and textbook costs are paid for by the student’s school district. Students may be responsible for all costs associated with the course if students are not successful. Students should check with their high school on their policy.
Where do classes meet?
Classes may meet at students’ high school, a CVTC host site, online, or a CVTC campus.
What is the commitment for students?
Students are required to attend an orientation session before the start of the academy. Student must attend classes, communicate effectively, and participate appropriately in coursework.
How do students get required textbooks?
School districts cover the cost of required textbooks/resources. Students will receive information at the orientation session on how to order books.
What technology resources does CVTC offer?
Students will be assigned a student ID number. Students use this number to log into their CVTC account. Using the student intranet, they may access their CVTC email and courses.
How do students access CVTC courses?
Courses taught by CVTC instructors may be accessed through the learning management system (LMS), Canvas.
What is the early alert process?
Instructors may submit an early alert for students that are struggling academically. Once an early alert is submitted, the student will be contacted by CVTC support specialists and/or a high school academy specialist (HSAS) to help them be more successful. Students should be prepared to meet with a HSAS in-person, online, or by phone to discuss CVTC services and successful class strategies.
How do FERPA rules apply to HSA students?
At the orientation session, the student will fill out a supplemental information/FERPA release form allowing CVTC to discuss educational records with the high school and optionally the student’s parents or guardians. Course progress, behavioral concerns, and all grades for the student may be shared with the parents or guardians only if they have access to the student’s FERPA pin. CVTC may discuss student information with the student’s school since they are paying for the courses.
Can students drop a CVTC academy course?
Students may choose to withdraw from an academy course based upon the drop policy of CVTC. Students must complete a drop form to drop academy courses.
Do credits in the CVTC academy courses transfer to other colleges?
CVTC associate degree credits are widely accepted by many public and private four-year colleges and universities either on a course-by-course basis or program-to- program transfer. Transcripts are analyzed on an individual basis by the receiving institution to determine which credits will transfer. Students should consult with the admissions office at the educational institution to which they plan to transfer for more details. Why do school districts offer HSA?
School districts offer high school academies for a number of reasons. School districts may be offered additional funding from Department of Workforce Development (DWD) incentive grants for students who graduate with industry credentials. Districts are also required to provide students the option to take 18 college credits not offered through their current curriculum. School districts are required to provide individual academic and career planning for all students and HSA help districts meet this requirement.
How do students access their grades?
Student may access grades for CVTC courses during the course via the learning management system (LMS), Canvas. After a course is completed, students may view grades via the student information system (SIS) in the student intranet.
Do grades earned in academy courses follow students?
Grades earned in academy course will affect a student’s college GPA. Final course grades display both on the student’s high school transcript and CVTC transcript.
How do students view CVTC academy course offerings?
Students may view a list of academies of an entire school year including summer at the following website: www.cvtc.edu/hsacademies
