IT - Software Development Specialist
CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer high school sophomores, juniors and seniors that are interested in pursuing a career in the IT field an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs. Students enrolled in this academy will focus on the exploration of resolving software - based computer problems in today's digital office environments.
Credential Earned: IT Software Development Specialist (30 - 152 - 5), Technical Diploma
*A grade of C - or higher is required in all courses.
Location: Online/web - conference. Students will need access to a computer to participate in the academy.

Students work with a text editor and a browser to develop web pages from scratch using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control color, layout, text, and images. Problem - solving skills are practiced as students complete a variety of programming exercises using the JavaScript programming language. Students explore the history and evolution of databases, and investigate current database usage in the industry. Students who successfully complete the courses will earn an IT - Software Development Specialist Technical Diploma from CVTC. This technical diploma prepares individuals to provide technical assistance in resolving software - based computer problems in today’s digital office environments.
Course Descriptions
152 - 118 Introduction to Computers Programming (3 credits)
This is an introductory course that explores Information Technology - Software Development. The fundamental concepts in this course include: operating systems, file management, problem solving, programming concepts, and an introductory look at the JavaScript programming language.
801 - 196 Oral/Interpersonal Communication (3 credits)
Focus on developing speaking, verbal, and nonverbal communication and listening skills through individual presentation, group activities, and other projects.
152 - 107 Web 1 - HTML & CSS (3 credits)
This course is designed to be a "first course" in website development. Students work with a text editor and a browser to develop web pages from scratch using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control color, layout, text, and images. Responsive design principles and accessibility standards are incorporated to ensure websites are usable and professional - looking. Tables, forms, audio, and video components are included to add variety and pizzazz.
152 - 132 Database 1 (3 credits)
Designed as a first database course, this course introduces students to the concepts of relational database management and beginning SQL. Students explore the history and evolution of databases, and investigate current database usage in industry. This relational model is examined and utilized as students practice creating, populating, manipulating, and querying multi - table relational databases using both the MS Access graphical user interface and SQL.
152 - 101 Programming Fundamentals (3 credits)
This course is designed to be a student's first programming course. It provides an introduction to fundamental computer programming concepts including: input - processing - output, if - then - else logic, for loops, and loops. Students use pseudo code and flowcharting tools to build problem - solving skills. Programming concepts are applied and problem - solving skills are practiced as students complete a variety of programming exercises using the JavaScript programming language.
