FireMedic Overview
CVTC offers a FireMedic program that allows you to receive training in fire rescue and EMS training. This is a challenging program but comes with a great sense of accomplishment once completed. This accomplishment continues throughout your career, as you help people on a daily basis. Students that succeed in this program have a strong sense of self-discipline and a desire to help people.
In CVTC’s FireMedic program you will learn:
- Firefighting techniques, skills, and inspection
- Rescue and response to medical and traumatic emergencies
- Vehicle extrication rescue
- Respiratory management
- Pump operations
- Patient assessment and EKG interpretation
- Fire public education
- Firefighter evolutions
This program includes special courses in water, confined spaces, trench, and high angle rescue. It offers plenty of hands-on experience as well as in-depth classroom training.
Students will complete a paramedic clinical internship where they will practice paramedicine in a health care environment with actual patients under the supervision of instructors or an approved specialist.
In addition, students also complete a FireMedic internship that will allow them to actively participate as a 'working' member of a fire department. Students work the 24-hour shift schedule at one full-time local fire department, and perform the same duties as the firefighters.
Upon graduation from this program, you will be prepared to take the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-Paramedic) and the State of Wisconsin Firefighter I and Fire Apparatus Driver Operator Certification exams.
